Munroe Island · Kerala02 / Rooms & house

The rooms, the common spaces, and everything that comes with them.

Photographed plainly, in daylight, with nothing moved. What you see below is what the house looks like.

01 — The rooms

Queen beds, teak frames, and a window worth opening.

Every room has a queen bed, its own television, air conditioning and an ensuite bathroom with hot water at any hour. Toiletries, tea and coffee are put out for you; breakfast is included.

On room names

We don’t give the rooms names or numbers here, and we’re not going to invent any. Tell us roughly what you’d like — a balcony, a view of the palms, ground floor — and we’ll tell you honestly what’s free.

Light comes through, not at you

Interiors are warm — cream plaster, honey teak, polished floor. The windows are the opposite: hard, high-key green. Several rooms are separated from the verandah by a teak-framed glass partition, so that green carries right through the middle of the house.

What actually differs between rooms

Not much, and we’d rather say so. The beds, the bathrooms and the fittings are the same. What changes is the window: some rooms open onto the balcony, some look down the length of the verandah, some sit in the corner with palms on two sides.

Honest caption

Both photographs above are of the same bathroom — it is the only one that has been photographed so far. The others are built to the same specification.

03 — Common spaces

The garden, the living room, the dining area and the common balcony are yours too.

The sitting area

A teak slat-back bench sofa, a glass-topped table, and the doors open. Most evenings this is where people end up, somewhere between coming back from the water and going out to eat.

The kitchen

Open, grey quartz, under its own run of teak windows. Breakfast comes out of here, and so does the tea and coffee that’s there whenever you want it.

The garden, at ground level

There is a garden, and you are welcome in it. It appears in these photographs only over a parapet or through a window, because nobody has stood in it with a camera yet.
