Welcome
Welcome to Olam by Plasseril
A little home tucked away in the quiet beauty of Munroe Island, where the days move a little slower, the evenings feel a little softer and nature is never too far away.
At Olam, we’ve tried to create more than just a place to stay — a space that feels warm, unhurried and homely.
Olam (ഓളം) is Malayalam for a ripple — the small, slow kind that crosses still water. The ring of interlaced waves in our mark is exactly that.
The house
A new house, built plainly, with the green left where it was.
Teak, cream plaster, polished floors and a long upper verandah. Nearly every window is a teak-framed rectangle with the garden pressing against it.
The upper verandah
It runs the whole length of the house under a teak-plank soffit, behind a low white parapet. Coconut palms come up past it on three sides. It is the part of the house guests end up using most, usually with a cup of tea.
Teak windows, green outside
The rooms are warm-toned and quiet; the windows are not. Every one of them opens onto areca and coconut, and the light that comes back in is a hot, high-key green. We have not adjusted it in these photographs.
One angle, so far
Plate I is the only photograph that exists of the outside of the house. There is no picture yet of the side elevation, the lane that brings you in, or the house at the end of the afternoon. We would rather show you an empty frame than something that isn’t ours.
The house from the lane, and the side elevation late in the day. Not yet shot.
The rooms
Queen beds, teak frames, air conditioning, and a window worth opening.
Every room has a queen bed, its own television, air conditioning and an ensuite bathroom with hot water at any hour. Breakfast, tea and coffee are on us.
Beyond that, the rooms differ mostly in what they look at — palms, the garden, or the length of the verandah. Tell us what you’d prefer and we’ll do our best.
The place
Munroe Island
A cluster of small islands where the Kallada River meets Ashtamudi Lake. Canals run between them, some barely wider than the boat that goes down them.
- 01 The canal tour Two to three hours by country canoe, best at sunrise or late afternoon. Small boats, about six people. We’ll help you arrange it.
- 02 Village life Coir retting and weaving, fishing, prawn farming, boat building — going on either side of you as you pass.
- 03 Kingfishers, herons Migratory and backwater birds along the channels and the lake edge.
