Munroe Island ยท Kerala
A little home tucked away
in the quiet beauty
of Munroe Island.
Where the days move a little slower, the evenings feel a little softer and nature is never too far away.
At Olam, we’ve tried to create more than just a place to stay — a space that feels warm, unhurried and homely.
The rooms
Teak, white linen,
and a window
full of green.
No two rooms are laid out quite the same. Tell us what you’d like and we’ll tell you what’s free.
-
A corner run of teak casement windows. A wall fan, a television, a snake plant on a cane stool. -
A teak-framed glass partition holds the light between the bed and the sunlit verandah. -
Full-height glazed doors that open straight onto the balcony. -
A long run of teak windows onto areca and coconut palms. -
A mirror-front teak almirah, and a snake plant in a terracotta pot.
The bathroom
Frameless glass.
Onyx-look tile.
Hot water, always.
The common spaces
The rest of the house
is yours too.
Breakfast is
on the house.
Black granite, fresh flowers on the table, and the kitchen counter just beyond it. Tea and coffee are there whenever you want them.
The verandah
The long way round
the whole house.
A teak-plank soffit overhead, a white parapet at the rail, and coconut palm trunks going up past it. It runs the length of the upper floor.

Munroe Island — Mundrothuruthu — is a cluster of small islands in Kollam district, at the point where the Kallada River runs into Ashtamudi Lake.
-
The canoe canal tour
Two to three hours in a small local boat through canals barely wider than the boat itself. Best at sunrise or late afternoon. They carry about six people. Kayaking, too, in small groups.
-
Village life, from the water
Coir retting and weaving. Traditional fishing. Prawn and fish farming. Boat building. Sand mining. You pass all of it.
-
Kingfishers and herons
Migratory and backwater birds along the canals.
-
The Kallada Boat Race
The snake-boat race is held here during the ten-day Onam festival season.
