The Olam medallion, a ring of interlaced curling waves

OLAM

A relaxing retreat along the backwaters of Kallada.

Munroe Island, Kerala

Chapter one

A little home, tucked away

Welcome to Olam by Plasseril. A little home in the quiet beauty of Munroe Island, where the days move a little slower, the evenings feel a little softer and nature is never too far away.

We've tried to create more than just a place to stay: a space that feels warm, unhurried and homely.

Palms rise straight past the parapet.
Open glazed teak door leading onto a private balcony
Every evening ends on the verandah.

Chapter two

Rooms that keep the green close

Queen beds, quiet air conditioning and hot water around the clock. Every room keeps a wall of teak-framed glass, and the garden does the decorating.

Guest bathroom with a frameless glass shower screen and beige onyx-look tile
The bath, in warm stone.
Bedroom with a run of teak windows onto areca and coconut palms
The signature frame: teak, glass, and the green pressing in.
Still dark green water with one set of slow ripple rings, palms reflected along the top

In Malayalam, ഓളം is the ripple. The small wave that crosses quiet water.

The house takes its name from the water it sits beside.

Chapter four

Where the river meets the lake

Munroe Island is a cluster of small islands where the Kallada River meets Ashtamudi Lake.

The way through it is a canoe barely wider than you are: two or three unhurried hours along canals under the palms, best at sunrise or in the late afternoon.

Along the water, village life carries on. Coir is retted and woven, prawns are farmed, boats are built. Kingfishers and herons work the shallows. During Onam, the Kallada boat race brings the snake boats out.

We'll help you arrange it.
